I went to Lizard Studios!!!

There isn't really a better way to describe meeting Dima than what I posted on Facebook, so I'll just copypaste that.

--

As you can tell from my profile picture, I have now met the unhaveable love of my life, Dmitry Koldun. I thought I'd give everyone a chance to read the full-as-I-can-make-it story of what happened.

First of all, I didn't find him right away. In fact, far from it. I was originally planning to meet him coming out of his web conference for Argumenti i fakti (AIF). I had looked up the building a few days ago and I knew where it was and how to get there. Since the conference ended at three, my dad and I tried to get there just a few minutes before the hour so we could see him without waiting too long. We managed to hit our time target exactly right and talked to the guard at the door to the AIF building. I told him I had heard that Dima was having a web conference there and I had come all the way from the US to see him. The guard spent a little time on his phone and reported back to me that web conferences and other filmed events took place in another building, for which he gave us the address.

We were never going to reach the building in time. It was already past three and the building was an awful lot of walking and two metro stops away, plus Dima was probably headed for Belarus where he soon had concerts and interviews. The only other Dima-related place I knew of in Moscow was Studiya Yasheritsa, or Lizard Studios. It was unlikely Dima was there, but there was probably someone working there to whom we could give my lizard and a little note with my contact details.

Off to Lizard Studios! I know that it's at the metro stop Prospekt Mira, I know that it's in the Olympic Stadium Complex, and I know that it's under an Electrolux sign and has a mini train engine in front of it. What I don't know, unfortunately, is what side of the building it's on, and that the stadium complex has two levels. My dad and I spent close to an hour walking around the building, looking for any sign of what I had seen in pictures and videos. Finally, after lots of complaining and confusion, we finally went down a couple of ramps and spotted the train. Also, we spotted... Dima? Nope! He just had the same haircut and build. But this was the right place!

There was a guard at this door too. I said I wanted to see Dima Koldun from Lizard Studios and, again, that I had come all the way from the US to see him. This guard picked up a phone as well, with better results. Within a few minutes, Natalya, Dima's secretary and PR manager, came down the stairs. "What do you want with Dima?" she asked. "Autographs? Photos?" "Photos, yeah," I replied, "and I also brought him something..." I showed her the stuffed lizard I bought for Dima, and I think it was this that made her trust me. She said that Dima was very busy, but she would try to bring him down for five minutes to get a quick photo with me.

We sat there in the lobby of the office building containing Lizard Studios, waiting. Dima was there! He was so close! I kept waiting for him to come down the stairs with Natalya, so I was nervous when she came down alone. I thought I had wasted a day in Moscow until she said the words... "Come on up!"

Up the stairs we went, down the hall, through the door... and the first person I saw was Bagrat Vartanyan, Dima's main songwriter. I waved a little, but I was distracted by Natalya walking into another room and saying "Dima, here's the visitor for you from the US." And he was there...

I FELT LIKE MY HEART STOPPED.

Yes, he casually greeted me with the generic "Hi, how are you?" but all I could do was bounce up and down, smile like there was no tomorrow, and say "AMAZING!" He shook my hand, pulled me close, and kissed me on the cheek. I know, this is his normal greeting, but it still made me feel wonderful. Then we took a photo, to make sure that happened. But we weren't prepared for him to offer us... drinks and a seat on the couch? You want us to come in and talk? Yes please!

Sooooo basically, I hung out with Dima for the next half hour. It was awkward for the first few minutes, because - well, let's face it, how do you talk to an awesome singing star without it sounding like an interview? I began to lose hope, but then he started talking, and it felt much better. Our topics of conversation included:

- His future plans. He's working on his second album (still doesn't have a name) and he's contributing to the songwriting but not really doing any all by himself, or so it seemed. He's also not doing any concerts in Moscow this month, but the reason is that he's playing a part in a short TV film. YOU HEARD IT FROM ME FIRST.

- My future plans. I didn't tell him that much, but I did tell him I want to be a singer.

- Russian and Moscow. He was impressed with how my Russian was sounding (though not impressed as Natalya) and he was interested in knowing why I chose the language. Even though I wanted to say "Because of you!" I refrained and told him just that there is a lot of Russian classical repertoire. When I said that I was here to study Russian, he asked if this was our first time in Moscow - it is - and what we thought of it.

- Yes, I am allowed to call him .

- America. I told him about the various fans he has in the US (though I was too embarrassed to ask if he could make my fan club official) and asked if he had plans to come over. He said he would really like to, but it would be difficult. Not only would he have to get a visa, but he's been photographed with a very unwanted man, namely Pres. Lukashenko of Belarus. Dima poses no threat to any western country, but someone seeing that photo might not know that. For now, he's just being careful. On a lighter note, he asked me about singers who are popular in the US, and I played him a Sara Bareilles song.

- Belarus. While we were on the topic of unwanted Belarusians, my dad had a little talk with Dima about the trouble over there. Dima doesn't deny that there's trouble in his home country (although he did joke before that "I go there and everything is so cheap!") and is hoping for a recovery but is slightly pessimistic. I told him I had been to Minsk once and thought it was pretty and very open, and assured him that I had a Belarusian friend to protect me.

- My music! Yep, when I mentioned I was a singer, Dima was interested. I ended up playing quite a few songs for him on my phone and on YouTube. He said that I sounded "similar to other American singers" (don't quite know what that means), my music had some romantic elements, and some sounded a little like punk rock. I can take that. I am definitely sending him a copy of IDAOTOW when I get home.

I reminded Dima of my videos for his birthday, and he remembered them and said he liked them. I also gave him his lizard. He showed it to Bagrat ("Hey look, we got another one!") and then held it by the tail and said he would probably hang it on a lamp somewhere.

CONTINUED FROM THE PREVIOUS POST

At the end of the visit, Dima motioned to Natalya, who handed him a silver sharpie and some things to sign. I ended up with very nice comments on two postcards and an Out of the Blue bonus EP. I couldn't stop saying "thank you" and "you are amazing" on the way out.

And so a dream ended. Or did it? He did say "Uvidimsya".........

I still can't believe how nice Dima is. I mean, there are the normal fangirly ways to love him, such as his voice and his looks and his songs. Then there are the slightly deeper ways like his personality and his knowledge and his sense of humor. But in the flesh? The reasons multiply. The fact that he would interrupt his work to have a real conversation and "hang-out" in his studio with one fan, even if it is a fan from across the ocean, is just the mark of an outstanding person. Many people say meeting their favorite stars makes them feel totally different about them. Me? I just like him a lot more.

Conversations with people besides Dima were all in Russian. With Dima, it was about half and half. The Russian parts were mostly when Dima and I were talking to each other and the English parts were mostly when we included my dad in the conversation. And there were several times when my dad or I would say something in English and he would respond in Russian.
